Blighted ovum is a type of miscarriage that often occurs in the first 3 months of pregnancy. In a blighted ovum, pregnancy occurs, but the embryo implanted in the uterus may not develop into a fetus. The cause of blighted ovum is still unclear, but it may be due to various factors, such as abnormal cell division, abnormal chromosomes, or weak eggs or sperm.  

Incomplete fertilization is the normal formation of a gestational sac, but when examining the gestational sac, there is no fetus.   • Missed period 
  • Breast sagging
  • Morning sickness

When a pregnancy ends, signs of miscarriage may appear, such as:

  • Abdominal cramps or lower abdominal pain
  • Vaginal bleeding  , which may contain blood clots or tissue.
  • There are no signs or symptoms of pregnancy.

Blighted ovum is an abnormal pregnancy in which the placenta and gestational sac develop, but the embryo atrophies first. When examin by ultrasound, only an empty gestational sac is found, but no embryo is found.

Women of all ages are at risk of developing this condition, depending on the genetic makeup of the woman. The risk increases with age and past pregnancy history. It can also be cause by abnormal chromosomes in men.

Regular prenatal care and pregnancy check-ups will help us know if we are at risk of abnormal pregnancy symptoms, allowing us to plan treatment in a timely manner.
